1. Environmental Physics and Informatics Laboratories

The equipment of the section of Physics and Informatics include field and indoor laboratory facilities, as follows:

Α. Indoor Laboratory Equipment:

This equipment is associated with applications associated with three scientific fields:

Α1. Informatics and Computing

Utilizes a local network of 30 PCs. The educational and research activities of the Laboratory included but are not limited to:

  • Numerical processing of spatial gridded datasets,

  • Analysis of spatio-temporal observations and datasets,

  • Mathematical modeling.

  • Software design and code development,

  • Environmental Informatics

Α2. Fluid Mechanics, Hydrology, and Meteorology-Climatology

Incorporates educational and research arrangements, such as:

− Open type wind tunnel,

− Hydraulic bench and flow meters,

− Venturi meter, Bernouli and pipe energy loss apparatus, Reynolds meter, laminar flow-lines table,

− Meteorological sensors, Met mast arrangements and data loggers.

Α3. Physics and Renewable Energy Sources

Incorporates educational and research arrangements, such as:

− 1p and 3p power analyzers, RLC meters, oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators,

− RF field meters, Geiger meters, magnetic field meter, power generators, power distribution simulator,

− Photovoltaic generators and medium-power Wind Turbine,

− Solar spectrophotometer, Solar irradiance and Solar energy meters,

− Aeolic power measurement arrangements.

Β. Field Equipment:

14 permanent field installations for the monitoring and logging of basic Environmental, Meteorological, and Climatic parameters along the Ionian Islands complex, geographically distributed as follows:

− 4 scientific stations in Corfu and Paxos islands,

− 1 scientific station in Lefkada island,

− 3 scientific stations in Cephalonia,

− 5 scientific stations in Zakynthos,

− 1 scientific station in Ilia (Peloponnesus).

The major part of the observations produced by the aforementioned network of scientific stations is freely accessible in real time through the internet, provided by the web page http://ionianweather.gr/stations/ . Moreover, after 2016 the entire arrangement has been incorporated to the National operational network of the Hellenic National Meteorological Service

 

2. The scientific equipment of the Laboratory of Chemistry and Environmental Engineering includes:

− Particulate matter spectroscopic analyzer (unique in Ionian Sea)

− Atomic absorption Spectroscopy (flame and graphite furnace)

− Gas Chromatography
− Mass Spectrometry
− Total Organic Carbon Analyzer

- Total Organic Nitrogen Analyser
− Ultra pure water device
− UV-VIS spectroscopy
− Analyzer BOD
− Analyzer COD
− pH meter, conductivity meter, DO meter
− Portable Air quality pollution detectors

− Stereoscopes and microscopes connected with camera and PC compatible
− Portable water quality meters

− Portable soilcquality meters

− Portable leaf area index (LAI) meter

 

3. Environmental Management and Ecology Laboratory

Environmental Management and Ecology Laboratory is operated by the academic staff members Dr. Costas Poirazidis, Dr. Aristotelis Martinis and Dr. Georgios Karris. The laboratory participates in numerous research, conservation and educational projects within the framework of national and European funded programmes. Some of the topics are:

a) Assessing, monitoring and interpretation of changes on ecosystems (research focused on land-uses and diachronic landscape changes in Ionian Islands e.g. Zakynthos, Cephalonia, Kerkyra).

b) Monitoring of ecological changes and anthropogenic activities in local and regional scale (e.g. impact of repeated fires on Mediterranean ecosystems biodiversity, impact of different fishery gears and illegal hunting on marine and terrestrial biodiversity respectively, assessing of organic and inorganic pollutant levels in marine and terrestrial ecosystems by using bioindicator species).

c) Study, analysis and interpretation of ecological phenomena in natural, semi-natural and urban ecosystems by fitting models to experimental and open data sets for environmental variables (e.g. predictions about natural regeneration levels in burnt areas, home range and foraging areas of seabirds compared to abiotic factors and human-induced activities such as fishery)

d) Data collection and evaluation of ecological parameters (ecological field surveys and assessments of flora and terrestrial fauna including avifauna and soil fauna of Ionian Islands, research on processes that determine the natural regeneration of Mediterranean ecosystems, identification and mapping of habitat types in the Ionian Islands, application of remote sensing techniques for animal tracking and evaluation of biodiversity in natural, semi-natural and urban ecosystems).

(e) Research and study of wild fauna habitats and population parameters such as survey and census of total and breeding populations, monitoring of breeding performance, migration phenology and ecology of wild avifauna species in stop-over sites of the Ionian Sea by using bird ringing and collection of morphometric data, as well as data collection for environmental abiotic components and evaluation of their impact on life

(f) Environmental education and sustainability issues (research focused on integrated management and sustainable tourism development of areas suffered from natural disasters e.g. fires, evaluation of correlations and impact assessment between changes of land-uses, landscape and sustainable development, ecoacoustics or soundscape studies and creation of environmental education tools for general public and specific target groups).
